Albizia Julibrissin – Silk Tree
90lt pot – trunk 15-17cm — 1/2 standard
Tree with spreading crown, covered with dark pink, almost red, silky plumes in summer and light green foliage similar to that of mimosas.
This beautiful shrub, originally from Persia, a region with a mild climate, has a light umbrella-shaped habit and can reach a height of 5m (16 ft 5 in). It is hardy up to -10°C and is known as the “Acacia of Constantinople”. The shrub has graceful deciduous leaves that are compound and divided into very fine leaflets. The leaves are rounded and light green, resembling mimosa, and are around 20-30 cm (11.8 in) long. In July, the spreading crown is covered with dark pink pompoms, formed by a large cluster of stamens that look silky and solitary.
The Albizia julibrissin grows in any fertile, well-drained soil in a warm, sunny and protected position from cold winds. It adapts well to cooler climates if planted in a sheltered, south-facing location but does not tolerate winter humidity. Severe pruning stimulates numerous vigorous shoots.
The Albizia julibrissin is an excellent shrub to create shade and should be planted alone in a location to enjoy its gentle habit. An evergreen palm, forming a small tree, with a stout, fibre-covered trunk bearing a terminal tuft of deeply divided, fan-shaped dark green leaves to 1m in width. Large, arching sprays of small, light yellow flowers appear in summer followed by small, kidney-shaped yellow to blue-black fruits in the autumn. Grow in any well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or lightly dappled shade. Needs protection from strong or cold drying winds and will need protection from hard winter frosts..
