Acer Palmatum: Bi-hoo

Although one of the smaller Japanese maples, Bi-hoo can still provide fantastic impact and colours in your garden. Its bright green/yellow lobed leaves appear in spring with a light pink flush. These pink colours fade into deep shades of yellow and orange in autumn. As a bonus once the leaves have fallen heading into winter they reveal bright golden yellow/orange stems. This tree therefore provides colour for gardens throughout all the seasons while maintaining a compact size. In general it likes a sheltered spot with partial or full sun.

Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
