Acer Palmatum: Shaina

Acer Palmatum: Shaina

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: partial shade or full sun
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: slow-growing
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The new foliage of this striking Japanese maple emerges in spring a vibrant red, and as it ages it deepens in colour, turning rich claret until the autumn when it becomes a brighter shade once again before it falls. In shadier conditions, where the foliage is shaded by the outermost leaves, it may turn greenish, but it will usually retain a mahogany blush. ‘Shaina’ makes a superb specimen in borders or large containers.

Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
