Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) Bare Root Hedging — 40–60cm, Bulk Pack of 1,000
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is the UK's most widely planted native hedging species and a stalwart of rural, agricultural, and landscape planting schemes. Supplied here as bare root whips at 40–60cm in bulk packs of 1,000 — the ideal choice for large-scale, cost-effective establishment where volume and value are the priority. Suitable for trade buyers, farmers, fencing contractors, landscape architects, and local authorities planting field boundaries, wildlife corridors, or rural hedgerows.
Growth Habit
Hawthorn is a vigorous, thorny, deciduous shrub that forms an exceptionally dense, stock-proof hedge over time. At the 40–60cm whip size, plants establish rapidly from a young age, developing strong root systems before top growth accelerates. Left unclipped, Hawthorn produces abundant white blossom in spring followed by bright red haws in autumn — both of outstanding ornamental and ecological value.
Soil & Site Suitability
One of the most site-tolerant native hedging species available, Hawthorn performs across a wide range of soil types including heavy clay, loam, chalk, and thin upland soils. It is well-suited to exposed and elevated sites and handles harsh, windy conditions better than most species. Reliable across all UK regions in full sun to partial shade.
Wildlife & Ecological Value
Few native species match Hawthorn for ecological value. Its dense, thorny canopy provides secure nesting and roosting habitat for farmland and garden birds including yellowhammers, linnets, and house sparrows. Spring blossom supports over 150 invertebrate species as well as bees and hoverflies, while the haws provide a critical autumn and winter food source for thrushes, fieldfares, redwings, and small mammals. An essential species for biodiversity net gain (BNG), agri-environment, and countryside stewardship schemes.
Planting Guidance
- Plant bare root stock between November and March while fully dormant
- Recommended spacing: 3–5 plants per metre for a stock-proof hedge
- Double-row planting at 45cm between rows recommended for field boundaries
- Tolerates most soils; improve drainage on waterlogged ground before planting
- Firm in well, water thoroughly, and apply a weed-suppressing mulch
- Cut back hard after the first growing season to encourage dense, bushy basal growth
