⚠️ PRE-ORDER NOW — LIMITED AVAILABILITY
Reserve your plants while stock lasts. Dry conditions during this year’s growing season have reduced the number available.
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is one of the UK's most valued native hedging species, prized for its dense, thorny growth habit and exceptional wildlife value. Available here in bulk packs of 1000 bare root whips at 60-90cm — the ideal specification for trade landscapers, contractors, councils, and estate managers establishing new hedgerows or restoring existing ones at scale.
Growth Habit
Hawthorn is a vigorous, deciduous shrub that establishes quickly from bare root stock. It produces a dense, thorny canopy that makes it one of the most effective stock-proof hedging plants available. Mature hedges offer year-round interest: frothy white blossom (May flower) in spring, and rich red haws in autumn and winter. Hawthorn responds well to hard cutting and can be kept neatly clipped or left to grow as a mixed native hedge.
Soil & Site Suitability
Extremely adaptable and one of the hardiest native species in the UK. Hawthorn tolerates a wide range of soil types including heavy clay, chalk, and poor soils. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is highly wind-resistant, making it suitable for exposed rural and coastal situations. Not suitable for waterlogged ground.
Wildlife & Ecological Value
Few plants offer greater ecological value than native hawthorn. The dense thorny structure provides secure nesting habitat for birds including yellowhammer, linnet, and whitethroat. Blossom provides abundant pollen and nectar for early pollinators, while the autumn haw crop supports thrushes, redwings, and fieldfares. Hawthorn supports over 300 insect species and is a cornerstone species in any biodiverse native hedgerow.
Planting Guidance
Plant bare root stock between November and March while dormant. Recommended spacing for a single-row hedge is 3-5 plants per metre; for a double-staggered row, plant at 5 per metre. Prepare ground thoroughly, removing perennial weeds prior to planting. Water in well if conditions are dry at planting time. No staking required. Mulching the base after planting helps retain moisture and suppress weed competition during establishment.
