Prunus laurocerasus – Cherry Laurel Hedging
Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as Cherry Laurel, is one of the UK's most popular evergreen hedging plants. With its large, glossy dark green leaves and vigorous growth habit, it creates a dense, attractive screen that provides year-round privacy and wind protection.
Key Features
- Fast-growing evergreen hedging shrub
- Large, glossy dark green foliage for dense coverage
- Tolerates a wide range of soil types and conditions
- Suitable for sun or partial shade
- Produces white flower spikes in spring, followed by dark berries
- Excellent for privacy screening, windbreaks, and formal hedging
Growing Information
Cherry Laurel is an adaptable and low-maintenance plant, thriving in most well-drained soils. It performs well in both full sun and partial shade, making it suitable for a wide variety of garden settings. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal care beyond an annual trim to maintain shape.
For a formal hedge, plant at 2–3 plants per metre. Trim once or twice a year, ideally in late spring and late summer, using secateurs rather than a hedge trimmer to avoid cutting through the large leaves.
